Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas

It’s a pet-friendly world – let’s go explore it!

It used to be that bringing a dog on vacation was strictly forbidden. You hit the road, your pet heads to the kennel. But times have changed, that’s for certain. And if you happen to be a dog, or a dog lover, a lot of those changes have been for the better. More and more, wherever you go and whatever you do, dogs are not only allowed, but welcome!

With this in mind, we wanted to share a few ideas on ways you can get away with your furry friend. After all, what fun is an adventure if you don’t bring your best friend along!

  1. Take ‘em to the beach. Whether it’s the east coast, west coast, or gulf coast, surf, sand and seagulls are a great way to spend a day. Most beaches require that your dog be on a leash, but check the local rules and regs. Places like Ft. Meyers, FL and Huntington Beach, CA are, like, super dog-friendly fur sure.

  2. Take ‘em to the mountains. Fresh air, hiking trails, and the scents of who-knows-what wildlife will have your four-legged friend’s tail wagging and nose sniffing. Be sure to bring along plenty of water and snacks for both of you. Asheville, NC might be a great place to start!

  3. Take ‘em downtown. More and more cities and towns have raised their games when it comes to being pet-friendly. Water bowls line the sidewalks of popular downtowns from Greenville, SC to Albequerque, NM.

  4. Take ‘em to the lake. To a dog, a lake is a little slice of heaven. Water to splash in, ducks to bark at, and usually more than a few trails to explore. Places like South Lake Tahoe, CA are famous for their dog-friendly beaches.

  5. Take ’em camping. Start small – maybe a night in the backyard – and work your way up to a bigger trip. Who knows – with a little luck and clear skies, your best buddy might even howl at the moon! TIP: Be sure you have a picture of your pet with you in case the crazy furball wanders off.

In the end, your pet will love any vacation you plan that includes him or her. Lots of hotels nationwide are now pet friendly, as are more and more AirBNB’s and VRBO’s. Just check before you book. And once you’ve got something planned, plan on making sure your pet feels safe and secure at all times, gets plenty of food and water, and is always under your supervision. After all, a fun vacation is a safe and healthy vacation for you and your dog.
